Admirers and Those Admired

We spent our childhood
chasing kites,
holding on to strings so tight
as if we could climb them
to the blue above,
or as if we wished
to tug down the bright jewels
into our arms below.

But truly...
we wanted neither really
because the things you most admire
including people,
the things that should float in the blue above
so freely,
are never quite the same
when tugged down to your eye level.
